Final Edition of calvary2college for School Year 2014-15!!
A word of thanks…
Recently, it dawned on both Mrs. Peabody and me that it was a “first & last” scenario for us. For me, it was my first year at CCHS, and it has been a fantastic year!! I’d like to thank Mr. Kilgore for his support of the college counseling program at CCHS. Additionally, I have found our CCHS parents to be wonderful supporters of both their students and also what we are trying to do through the college counseling program. Thank you for partnering with us. Furthermore, I have enjoyed my interactions with our CCHS students more than I can adequately express. So many times you made my day with a word of thanks, a bit of humor, or just trusting me with some matters you needed to discuss. You all truly made my year a special one!!
It is also a “last” for a Godly woman, great mentor, dear friend, and my sister in Christ – Cindy Peabody. As she has done for the past 15 years at CCHS, she will continue to invest her life into that of others for the glory of Jesus Christ (particularly her sweet grandchildren). As Scripture states, “Let another person praise you…” and that is my desire…to praise a person whose heart was knit with mine from the moment we met because we both love our Saviour, are called to His Kingdom work, and love students. Only God can form those kinds of deep friendships which remind us a bit of the amazing fellowship we will have in Heaven one day unfettered by the curse of sin. You cannot replace a Cindy Peabody. You can only hope that you honor her tireless efforts by continuing with excellence the work God used her to start. I thank my God on every remembrance of you, dear friend. There are several crowns in Heaven awaiting you for the many unseen acts of kindness you have offered to students, parents, and colleagues across time.
– Ms. Holderby

PSAT Preparation this Summer
Calvary Christian High School administers the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) each year to students in grades 9-11. This year’s administration will occur on October 14, 2015. As mentioned in a previous calvary2college article, this administration will be the first of the redesigned SAT Assessments. Rising juniors should take advantage of the summer to review their results from the PSAT taken this past year and address any weaknesses prior to going into the all-important administration of the PSAT/NMSQT as an 11th grader.
Why do we give the PSAT at CCHS? Here are just a few reasons:
- It’s good practice for the “experience” of taking standardized exams in general.
- For 9th and 10th graders, gaining familiarity with the PSAT allows students to feel more confident when it comes time to take the SAT.
- For 11th graders, taking the PSAT may qualify them for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Only 11th graders are entered into this competition.
- Information gained from the PSAT self-assessment as well as the test scores helps students in defining the “best fit” for college.
- Colleges use the data gained from the PSAT to begin recruitment of students.
- Students can take advantage of fantastic resources provided by The College Board to do further research on colleges, academic majors, and other valuable information pertinent to their college search process.
- Additionally, The College Board provides feedback on areas of academic strengths and weaknesses. This information is incredibly helpful for addressing any deficiencies prior to taking the actual SAT.
How Can I prepare for the PSAT this summer?
Practice – Use the free test preparation materials provided by The College Board: PSAT Test Preparation Website. Practicing for standardized tests is very similar to preparing for a marathon. As you practice, be sure to simulate the time pressure you will be under.
Read, read, read!! Find a few good books you really enjoy and take them with you to the beach, the pool, etc. As a culture, we don’t read enough and it shows in various ways. Readers are leaders, so become both. 🙂
Use reputable tutors to help address any areas of weakness identified on previous practice tests. Sometimes these “weaknesses” are just fundamentals you have forgotten (e.g. grammar). However, you may also identify true deficiencies. A good tutor will be helpful in assessing these areas and developing a plan to address them. This takes time, so don’t wait two or three weeks before the test to seek this kind of help.
ACT/SAT Information – Dates for School Year 2015-16
The ACT/SAT Test Dates for the 2015-2016 school year will be posted once The College Board releases their information. The ACT has already done so (click here).
Please remember that beginning in March, the new Redesigned SAT will be administered. Rising seniors will feel the most impact from this transition year. Taking the ACT or SAT is a graduation requirement. When signing up for the SAT or ACT you should include the Writing section.

A Meaningful Summer: Have You Planned Yours?
Did you know that selective and highly selective colleges give serious consideration to how you have spent your summers while in high school? “Meaningful” can have a variety of definitions, but these types of colleges typically will be looking for students who are serious about their academic preparation and contributing to the college community as well as to the world community.
Students can attend a pre-college program, secure an internship/job shadow, volunteer, or find a summer job. Taking the initiative to explore a new subject or attend a summer program will give you an advantage. Doing community service that is meaningful is important too. Tying your community service to a passion/talent you possess and looking for ways to make a difference in your church or local neighborhood will not only make you stand out in the competitive college-going crowd, but, more importantly, it will also grow and shape a possible calling on your life.
Here are just a few examples of what this looks like (taken from the winners of the 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards):
Florida winner: A senior at a private school in Miami, Florida started a non-profit organization that has helped more than 500 undocumented young immigrants apply for temporary residence and employment in the US under DACA. She is from an immigrant family and is thankful for her US citizenship. She wants to help others find a pathway to citizenship.
Arkansas winner: A middle school student uses Christmas money to rent a plot in his church’s community garden, and then he grows vegetables that he sells to benefit a local shelter for homeless families.
Arizona winner: A high school freshman organizes patriotic shows for veterans at local nursing homes and veteran’s organizations. He and his performance troupe, known as “Swing Kids,” rehearse and perform on weekends. After the shows, they take time to hang around and listen to the veterans talk about their experiences.
As Christ followers, we should be looking for ways to “give a cup of cold water in Jesus’ name.” Doing so opens up opportunities to show you care about people and will give you a relationship from which you can share the most important news of all – The Gospel Message.

2014-15 College Admissions Cycle: Lessons Learned
As the college admission cycle comes to a close for the current year, admissions professionals begin to do a final analysis in order to inform the upcoming recruitment year. Here are some key findings prospective students and parents might find helpful as you continue your college research& planning:
- The average selectivity rate at four-year colleges was 64.7%, up slightly from 63.9%. Students who were put on a waitlist status were accepted at a slightly higher rate than previous years.
- Acceptance rates for early decision went up from 53% to 63%. A similar increase was reported for colleges who use some form of non-binding early action process. So, applying by priority decision deadlines or through the early decision process does pay off. Colleges find that filling their class with early qualified applicants allows them to shape the remainder of the student enrollment and answer institutional budgetary questions in a more timely manner. Therefore, rising seniors should continue to plan on completing their applications from July 1-October 1 to increase their chance of admission.
- The most important factors in evaluating college applications, in order, according to the report was as follows:
- grades in college-preparatory classes
- strength of the curriculum
- standardized admission test scores
- overall high school grade point average
Other factors: essay, demonstrated interest in college (e.g. official campus visit by student/parents), recommendations (if requested), extracurricular activities, and class rank.

The SAT Redesign: Coming Soon!!
The SAT and PSAT are getting a “face lift.” The College Board is launching the much-talked-about redesign starting with this fall’s PSAT (October). The new SAT will be given its first administration in March 2016.
There are 8 key changes to the assessment. For full descriptions of the content changes, please click here. A Power Point presentation for parents/students is also available. Some of the more practical changes are as follows:
Content is curriculum-based (more similar to ACT)
The Essay section is now optional and will be reported separately
The combined score scale will return to a 400-1600
The “trick question” approach to the former SAT has been removed
There is no penalty for guessing

Accepted Students: Next Steps and Advice
Below is a bullet list of items you should take note of as an accepted college freshman. Some suggestions come from my college colleagues directly and others are just general bits of advice for accepted students. Please review the video and information on this great website as well.
- Always check your email and your student website at the colleges you are accepted to. Be aware that at some point you will have a university email address created for you. Faculty and other college administrators (e.g. financial aid) use email and the student portal almost exclusively to communicate with students.
- Know who to communicate with regarding questions you have. If in doubt, always go back to your admissions counselor/admissions office. They will know where to direct you to get your answers.
- Be aware of freshman orientation dates. Freshman orientations sessions are critical to your success at college given the first semester is a significant time of transition.
- Housing – know how it works at your particular university. Many times it is a two-step process where you complete the housing application first and then later in the spring the institution uses some type of process to match you up with a roomie. By the way, if your college has Facebook or some other social media platform through which you can connect with other students, sign up!!
- If you are attending a Florida institution, be sure you have completed all residency documentation. Check with admissions and financial aid if in doubt.
- Be aware of FERPA! FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. FERPA states that once a student reaches the age of 18 or attends a post-secondary institution, he or she becomes an “eligible student,” and all rights formerly given to parents under FERPA transfer to the student. This new responsibility particularly impacts students and parents when it comes to viewing college grades, financial aid packages, and speaking with college personnel (e.g. faculty and academic advisors). Students must sign a FERPA waiver giving their parents the ability to obtain the student’s personal information and speak with college representatives about their student. You should ask your particular university how this process works since each institution has its own policy and procedures for FERPA. For further information about FERPA, click here.
- Stay in close communication with the financial aid office. You should know when they will begin freshman financial aid packaging and how their processes work in relation to accepting and rejecting financial aid offered by the institution.
- Don’t slack in your high school grades. All of the colleges will ask for final official high school transcripts. Additionally, if you have taken AP, you will need to request the College Board to send your scores. Dual Enrollment students must request SPC to send official college transcripts. Your offer of admission is contingent upon your successful completion of high school at the level the college desires.

Free SAT preparation now offered by Khan Academy. Personalized, free practice resources for the PSAT are now available. SAT practice tests will be available in June.

Course Selection 2015-16
Today students in grades 9-11 attended our second annual Course Assembly and EXPO. Students were walked through the process of requesting their courses for next year. This is not a difficult process, but there are several facets consider. The basic steps are to log into RenWeb, choose Student Information, then Course Requests. Read all instructions and the choose your requests in each drop down menu. Students may “change their mind” over the course of the week that Course Request is open. Only the last “save” is saved.
Occasionally a student will expect to find a course and will not see it in the drop down menu. Don’t despair! You will need to see Mrs. Peabody and the issue can be resolved. This most often occurs for students that transferred to CCHS after his/her freshman year.
Remember, your teachers are your best resource if you are trying to decide on moving levels (Traditional/Honors/AP or Dual Credit). Ask your current teacher in the department you are considering what he/she thinks of your ability to succeed.
All of the AP/Dual Credit handouts are available above (AP/DC 2015-16). The process for SPC and CCC are outlined as well as handouts for each AP/DC course.
Course Request will close at 3:00 pm on Friday, May 1. If a student does not fill out his/her course requests , administration will request on his/her behalf.

Advanced Placement & Dual Credit
Our Monday evening Advanced Placement/Dual Credit meeting was a hit! Over 120 families were represented as the AP faculty energetically informed the audience about their courses. Additionally, faculty members from Clearwater Christian College represented the newest dual enrollment courses of College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Introduction to Biology. These courses will be taken at the Clearwater Christian College campus with the college students adding a new dimension to the dual credit experience as our own high school students get a chance to be sharpened academically and spiritually by the CCC college students. Below is information related to admission to the Dual Enrollment options at both Clearwater Christian College and St. Petersburg College.
We realize that several folks were not able to be with us on Monday, so Mrs. Peabody has provided handouts as a guide. Simply go to the link at the top of this website page marked “AP/DE 2015-2016.”
General Guidelines When Considering Dual Credit or Advanced Placement (see the link above for the full Power Point presentation)
- You should schedule a time to meet with the respective faculty member so that you have a good understanding of the commitment you are making. You want to be sure to make a well-informed decision about Dual Credit/AP courses since it is not a good idea to drop them after enrolling in them. Many AP courses have summer assignments.
- When taking Dual Credit courses, remember you are starting your college transcript. The grade earned will not only be part of your CCHS record, but it will be the beginning of your college record. If you get a poor grade, you cannot ask a college to drop the grade or not to send the transcript to another college. That is an issue of academic integrity.
- Dual Credit and Advanced Placement courses are indeed difficult and will be very different from the high school courses you have taken….as they should be since they are college courses. Be strategic as to which courses you take and play to your strengths.
Dual Enrollment Application Guidelines
St. Petersburg College: Students currently enrolled in dual credit courses (US History/Composition) do not need to do anything through SPC at this time. Students who will be new to the SPC Dual Enrollment program, need to follow the guidelines given on the CCHS Dual Enrollment Process 2015-16 handout found under the link above. The deadline is May 22.
Clearwater Christian College: Please review the handout given under the link above. A link to the CCC application is included. Pay special attention to the calendar dates given. The four-year college calendar is typically not the same as our CCHS academic calendar. You are responsible to follow the college calendar as it pertains to any dual credit courses you may take on their campus. The deadline is also May 22.

National College Decision Day – May 1
May 1 has traditionally been known as the National Decision Day. It is the day by which most colleges ask students to make their final enrollment decision and pay the deposit. Many students will deposit well before that date, but you should know that no college can force you to decide any earlier than May 1 (exceptions – Early Decision & athletic scholarships). If financial aid is a factor (which for most students it is), you should contact your colleges’ financial aid offices to find out when they will complete freshman financial aid packaging. You should be able to access this information through the student portal on a particular college’s website. Here is a great article you should read as you prepare over the next few months to make your final college decision.
Ethically, you should only deposit at the college in which you intend to enroll. You should also notify the other colleges to which you were accepted that you are not planning to attend their institutions.

Spotlight Article: Military Options & College
For students who desire to serve their country and go to college, there are several options that should be considered. Each has its own “fit” component depending on the needs and desires of the student. At the heart of all these options is a built-in component of leadership development, team building, and discipline. All of which are great “soft skills” to take into the work place after serving one’s country in addition your academic preparation. While students can gain financial assistance serving through enlistment and the reserves, the two options highlighted below allow for a more focused attention on college first and then service to country upon graduation.
Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC): The ROTC program is offered at around 1000 colleges and universities in the United States. While preparing students to become commissioned officers, the military picks up the bill for tuition, room, board, textbooks, and supplies along with a monthly stipend. In turn, the student, upon graduation, commits to four-six years of service. The type of service will vary depending on the branch of the military these student signs with. For further details, check-out the websites given below:
Army ROTC
Air Force ROTC
Navy ROTC (The Marine Corp commissions through NROTC)
Military Service Academies: Service academies offer full four-year scholarships, and graduates become commissioned officers upon graduation and are required to uphold a service obligation of a minimum of five years. Admission to the service academies is competitive, requires a nomination/interview from Florida senator or congressman, and has several other steps. Students interested in this option should plan ahead and begin the process as early as their junior year.
United States Military Academy in West Point (Army)
United States Naval Academy in Annapolis
United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs

Important Dates for Seniors
- Seniors going on the senior trip will take final exams the week of May 11.
- Seniors not going on the senior trip will take final exams the week of May 18
- Mandatory Graduation Rehearsal – May 28 and 29
National College Decision Day – May 1
May 1 has traditionally been known as the National Decision Day.
